如上所述,设计活动的目的是为了对SKA各任务包进行准备,从而推进SKA1阶段。2013年11月,10个工作包国际联盟的形成聚集了来自世界各地的专家,涵盖了SKA需要的所有任务。这10个联盟也涉及了全球各行业的工业、工程和科学组织,来自五大洲的100个组织中的500多名人员。该联盟的工作细节参见工作包页面。
SKA1的设计研发工作是通过全球范围内的合作进行的,SKA董事会通过的该阶段的预算为6.5亿欧元。在这一阶段成功完成,并进行完初步设计审查后,全球的工程团队正在加紧进行建设前的最后设计阶段。
